What is the best way to contact the swim school?

Does AGBPC offer trial swim classes before enrolling in a class?
We do not offer the option of trying our swim school classes before enrolling, but we do invite parents to observe classes they are thinking of enrolling their children in. We are happy to answer any questions you might have about our program. Please feel free to come in and chat, or simply email our Swim School Principal at email@example.com.
I don't know what level my child should register for, what should I do?
If you have not previously attended classes with the Asphalt Green Swim School, please email our Swim School at firstname.lastname@example.org to determine the most appropriate level assignment for your child. Children over the age of 5 and deep water confident should allow for a brief swim evaluation prior to registration. Evaluations are fairly informal, but extremely beneficial for proper class placement. We have open evaluation times. Placements are subject to change based on the instructor evaluation during class.
- Monday through Friday between 1:00pm & 3:30pm
- Saturday & Sunday between 10:30am & 2:30pm
My child is too young or too old for a particular class, can they still attend?
All of the Asphalt Green Swim School classes are broken down into specific age ranges that allow for appropriate social interaction, as well as an optimum learning environment. We have a program for all ages and will find the right fit for you.
How do I register for classes?
You can register for classes on-line or in person. Members of the facility receive priority registration, as well as preferred pricing.
What if the class I want is already full?
You have three options:
- You can register for the same class at an alternative time.
- You can be placed on the waiting list in case someone else cancels or drops the class.
- If there are enough people on a waiting list we will try our best to accommodate the prospective swimmers and create a new class offering; however, this is not guaranteed.
- You can sign up for private lessons.
If I am put on a waiting list should I show up for the class?
No. Being on a waiting list does not mean that you are registered for the class. We will contact you after the second week of classes to either offer you a place in that class.
Can the Aquatics Manager or the Swim School Principal get me into a class that is already closed and started?
No. In order to keep classes at an optimal size and maintain program quality, registration is based on a first come, first served policy. No exceptions will be made. Please feel free to inquire about future registration dates to ensure your spot in our program.
Will you have the same class schedule year-round?
Asphalt Green Swim School offers a new class schedule four times a year. We run in a term basis (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring) and require new program registration each term. While offerings may be similar, we do not guarantee the same class schedule year-round.
If I register online, how do I get my class card to access the facility?
You can pick up your facility access card at the Asphalt Green BPC Welcome Center. All participants in our program must have a facility access card to gain entrance to the pool and/or locker rooms, please do not forget these.
How do I know when I do NOT have class?
All program registration reflects our “No Class Dates”. As a courteous reminder, we also post “No Class Dates” in the catalog, on our website, as well as on signs throughout the facility. These dates coincide with major events or holidays. If you suspect your class has been canceled you can find out by calling the facility at 212.298.2900 and speaking to a Guest Service Representative.
Will classes be canceled due to snow or inclement weather?
Classes can be canceled due to snow or inclement weather. If you think classes may be canceled, please call 212.298.2900 before leaving home. Asphalt Green reserves the right to cancel classes for safety precautions as needed. In addition, feel free to visit our webpage for up-to-date information.
Can I get a make-up class if my child is sick?
Yes; however, please be aware that we limit make-up classes to once (1) per term, and only offer them subject to availability. Make ups are required to be taken during the current semester and are prohibited to roll-over into following semesters. For make-up availability, simply e-mail us at email@example.com. Please let us know your child's full name, age, and the class that was missed; we will reply with appropriate days and times available. When can I start private lessons?
Private lessons operate on a similar schedule as Swim School classes. Continuing private lesson students may start lessons at the beginning of the term, while those new to private lessons will be begin as soon as possible, and on an on-going basis until registration closes.
Can I transfer from one class to another or from Swim School to Private Lessons?
Yes. However, in order to make sure that all of our swimmers get the most out of each program, transfers must be completed within the FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE TERM. We often have families on waiting lists, and if a spot opens up we want to offer that spot to a new swimmer as soon as possible. Please contact our Swim School at firstname.lastname@example.org or 212.298.2900 to handle these requests. All transfer requests must be made in writing to our Membership and Registration Department. Private lessons will not begin until all transfers are complete.
May I transfer between Asphalt Green Battery Park City and Asphalt Green on the UES?
Asphalt Green and AGBPC will not permit transferring from campus to campus. If you decide that you would prefer taking classes at our alternate location, you must remove yourself from your currently registered class, and then register accordingly at our other location. Our Registration department will gladly be of further assistance if needed.
Do I have to attend a Parent Orientation Session?
Yes. All families NEW to Asphalt Green Battery Park City's Swim School will need to participate in a Parent Orientation session prior to the session beginning. Please check the web site for dates and times of the Parent Orientation sessions. During these sessions, parents will have the opportunity to meet some of the faculty of Asphalt Green Battery Park City's Swim School, as well as go over procedures for picking up and dropping off children.
If my child is under 18 months, can I register without a Doctor's note?
You can register your child, but you will not be permitted into class until a doctor's note is provided and on file with our Registration Department. Please contact our Registration Department if you have any further questions regarding our Doctor's Note policy.
Does a parent have to be in the water with the child?
Yes. One parent or caregiver must accompany children ages 0-3 in the water for Water Babies, Advanced Water Babies, Water Tots, Advanced Water Tots, and for a portion of Water Sprites. Additional parents will NOT be allowed in the pool OR on the pool deck due to limited space.
Can I observe my child from the pool deck?
Due to safety requirements, and limited pool deck space, we cannot allow parent/caregiver observation on the pool deck at any time. There are a variety of areas to view our pool throughout and around the facility; however, again no observations will be permitted from the pool deck itself.
Can I use the pool/gym while my child is taking class?
Parent and caretakers are required to remain on the premise while children are taking classes. The facility itself is only to be used by members, or patrons who have paid for access the facility (classes not included). All patrons not entitled to facility usage, should wait patiently in the designated areas.
How will I know how my child is progressing?
Reports are sent home with students to indicate their levels of achievement. Progress Reports will be distributed at the middle of each term, and Report Cards at the end of each term. Please reference these reports for future program registration.
Will my child automatically graduate to the next level after each term?
All children learn at different rates and speeds. It is not advised to anticipate that every child will graduate to the next level after one semester of lessons. Typically, children need to repeat levels multiple times in order to successfully complete all requirements for graduation. Please understand that we look at the need to repeat levels as the child not mastering everything, as opposed to failing. Should you feel that your child needs to supplement their group learning, we encourage families to also sign up for private lessons to focus on individual needs.
How and when will I know if my child has graduated to the next level?
All children take part in graduation week on the last day of classes. This is a great time to celebrate the end of the swimming term and all that they have learned. Additionally, as mentioned above, our Progress/Report Cards offer instructor insight on class progression and future level assignment.
What is your refund policy?
All refund requests must be submitted in writing to the Membership Office. Refunds are computed from the date received (NOT POST MARKED).
The program refund or program credit schedule is different for Swim School and Private Lessons, but is as follows:
- Swim School:
- 100% refund or program credit: written request must be received 1 week prior to the first scheduled class.
- 75% refund or program credit: written request must be received 2 days prior to the second scheduled class, and refund or credit will only be awarded for classes NOT attended.
- NO REFUNDS OR CREDIT will be granted after the second scheduled class session. Refunds or Pro-Rated programs are not available for late registration.
- Private Lessons:
- If 24 hours or more notice is given to the Swim School from the participant- 70% credit will be offered at the end of the private lesson session.
- If less than 24 hours of notice, or absence of the participant- No Credit will be offered.
- If Asphalt Green Battery Park City must cancel the private lesson- 100% credit for that class will be offered.
All Asphalt Green programs are subject to change or cancellation. Asphalt Green cannot be responsible for providing make-ups, credits, or issuing refunds for programs missed as a result of illness, emergencies or other events beyond the control of Asphalt Green. The handling charge for all requested refunds is $15. Please allow four to six weeks from receipt for processing a refund request. Registration handling fees are not refundable. For some programs, such as year-long programs and camps, there may be exceptions which will supersede the above policy.
What should I bring to each swimming lesson?
- Swim suit
- Goggles (Super Sprites level and above)
- Swim Cap (If hair is below the ears)
- Program/Membership Card (grants access to facility)
- Non-Disposal AND disposable swim diapers (both must be worn by non-potty trained children enrolled in swim class). Available for purchase at Guest Services.
Does my child need to wear a swim diaper?
Children not toilet trained, or ages 4 and under, must wear non-disposable, rubberized pool diapers that fit tightly around their legs in addition to regular, disposable water diapers. Should you forget either of these items, they are available for purchase at the Welcome Center.
At what age must my child use the gender-appropriate locker room?
Children age 5 and older must use gender-appropriate locker rooms, or be accompanied by an adult in our Family Locker rooms.
