Dear Friends,
I am writing to ask for your financial support because I am passionately concerned about the growing crisis of childhood obesity!
Forty three percent of New York City schoolchildren in grades K-5 are overweight. Research now shows that 80% of children who were overweight at ages 10 through 15, will be obese adults at age 25 and as a result will likely be facing diabetes, chronic asthma and heart disease.
Everyone who cares about the well being of our communities has to take this challenge seriously. We can’t afford not to act.
Physical activity is an important antidote to obesity! Through our community programs for low income school children we are determined to motivate every vulnerable youngster and provide him or her with an opportunity to become stronger and healthier through physical activity.
Our successful community programs are stretched well beyond our current capacity. We must find the resources needed to take advantage of dozens of opportunities for expansion. For example, we are ready to bring out our Waterproofing program to two swimming pools in Harlem where our instructors and lifeguards can teach hundreds more children to swim and be safe in the water. Our incredibly successful free East Harlem gymnastics program for young girls, who are experiencing the power they can have over their bodies and their lives as well, has a long waiting list. The Recess Enhancement Program is demonstrating its capacity to affect an entire school culture through teaching organized games and physical activity at recess. One school, recently tagged as having too many behavior problems, has requested our presence five days a week.
Asphalt Green urgently needs your help to get many more kids moving! I hope you will join us in our attempts to help reverse this crisis of obesity and inactivity in the lives of so many children. We cannot do it without you.
